Organizing thoughts in public view
Decision Framework
Over the past few weeks I have been attempting to put together a framework for making decisions. Some of the big questions have been: Is happiness the root optimization factor? What elements contribute to the root optimization? What real pursuits contribute to these elements? I am confident that the result of my efforts is not accurate, but I think Francis Bacon would agree that it is good to start with a initial proposal and continue to challenge and refine it, rather than never propose anything.
For Happiness, yet stuck in the Crossroads
At the root of my decision-making framework I place an optimization for happiness. All other requirements and motivations are derived from this root. I hope that if one day I realize a specific self-imposed requirement does not increase my overall happiness, that I would eradicate that requirement and re-evaluate all decisions made because of it. Definition of happiness In prior conversations, I have attempted to define what I mean by happiness without too much success.
The Story of Philosophy
Today I finished reading The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant, which chronologically details the life and thoughts of many Western philosophers. I appreciated how Durant covers the historical context of each philosopher before diving into their specific offerings, which adds a significant amount of color to their stories. In an effort to gain a overarching perspective of Western thought, and organize my findings, I have decided to share the key elements of each philosopher that I have gleaned from the book.
Instability of Truth
If someone asked me why I am reading so many non-fiction and dense books, I would probably give two reasons. First, I am seeking for Truth. Second, I actually enjoy learning about these topics. Why is Truth so important? Defining Truth I capitalize the ’t' in Truth to emphasize that the type of truth being discussed is absolute truth, which is unchangeable and unknowable. Many philosophers have suggested a difference between absolute truth and perceived truth.
